Time for a Change – the timing of the next Flare festival

After the huge success of FLARE15 and FLARE17, Flare is making long term plans for the future. We know how much international emerging theatre artists welcome the support and profile the festival can offer, and we know how much the Flare audiences enjoy and value the great work we programme. And we want to keep doing it.

In fact we want to give Flare more room to achieve its ambitions, to work with our great venues to support and profile the work of more great new artists, and to help Manchester grow its reputation as an international home for the future of the most innovative new theatre.

Since the start, the main Flare festivals have all taken place alongside the Manchester International Festival (MIF). We have loved the support and context provided by MIF and their wonderful staff. We know they share with us a spirit of investment and belief in original new work, and we have loved the opportunities MIF has offered to further enhance the experience of the artists that Flare has brought to the city.

And we are hugely indebted to the wonderful staff at all the Flare venues, who have supported us so well, and always at a time when work on a much bigger scale also needed their attention. We really look forward to working with them all again!

But we have decided it is time for a change. So whilst Flare will remain a biennial festival, from now on it will be moving ‘out of sync’ with Manchester International Festival. With the next MIF scheduled to take place in July 2019, we are now planning for the next Flare International Festival of New Theatre to take place in July 2020 (dates to be confirmed).

We hope you don’t miss us too much in 2019, and that you join us again when we return in 2020!

The Flare team.
